Abibatu Kalokoh, oldest of 10, had been out of school for seven years and was a banana seller at one of the big road junctions on the way ‘up-country’.  She had run away from home at one point because her parents had arranged a marriage with someone much older than her.  She was not interested in him at all but still nurtured dreams of completing her education.

She nearly got herself kicked out of EducAid, in the very early days, because she persisted in copying.  It took us a while to realise that she had forgotten almost everything she had previously learned and really had to start completely from the beginning again.  Until we got that point, copying was her only option!

Today, she runs the women’s project in Rogbere and is doing a distance teacher-training programme at the same time.  A very challenging double task but she is very proud of her progress and is more than happy to encourage the girls in her care to use her as an example of what is possible if you persist.  We wish her every success.
