Anne Hewlett, trained the Sierra Leone Police and in 2005 visited EducAid.  She now volunteers and fundraises for EducAid in the UK.

“In 2001 after retiring from a successful 30 year career with Greater Manchester Police, I travelled to Sierra Leone as a training consultant working for the Department for International Development, training police officers to interview victims of rape and sexual abuse. Over the next four years I became familiar with numerous organisations and charities based there as the country and its people began to recover from the effect of a ten-year brutal civil war.

During this period I met Miriam as we worked together on the same project and I was aware that she was responsible for running the EducAid schools. In June 2005 I visited all four schools and was overwhelmed by what I saw, especially the enthusiasm of the teachers and students, who were achieving so much with so little. I collected as much information as I could about the charity and was impressed by the fact that the trustees of the charity cover all overheads in the UK so every penny raised actually gets to Sierra Leone.

The impact of the experience being that on my return home, I felt compelled to raise money for the most worthy cause I have encountered. I am secure in the knowledge that 100% of all monies donated go directly to the charity. I am inspired by what has been achieved and am driven by a desire to actively assist the charity and drawing on my first hand experience in the field, I am totally committed to continue supporting EducAid.”
