Black History Month is celebrated in the United States of America and Canada in February, and in the United Kingdom in October. It is an opportunity for celebration, recognition, and debate. This year the theme of Black History Month in the US is Black Resistance, to remember how African Americans have resisted oppression, in all forms, since the nation’s earliest days. It commemorates the efforts of Black people to advocate for a dignified, self-determined life in a just and democratic society.
Education has been historically a powerful tool of resistance for Black people and communities in the US. Education institutions, such as Colleges and Universities, have provided important resources and spaces to critically educate students about their history. Students have been at the forefront of social justice movements since the nineteenth century, fighting to change the narrative that a race is superior to another to a narrative where all human beings are equal.

The School Management Committees (SMC) play a key role in the management of primary schools in Sierra Leone. They put the school leadership together with community representatives and local education stakeholders to supervise the functioning of the school and ensure the well-being of pupils and teachers.
At EducAid, we believe that no meaningful and sustainable school improvement is possible without community engagement and local ownership. For this reason, we engage the SMCs across our programmes and help them strengthen their capacity by facilitating discussions on roles and responsibilities in the school management as well as providing training on topics such as child protection and safeguarding.

Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
FGM comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. The practice is a form of gender-based violence (GBV) against girls and women. FGM violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.
EducAid is actively engaged to prevent and stop FGM in Sierra Leone. We conduct FGM safeguarding education in our schools and across our programmes. We engage whole communities to raise awareness and address the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences. We advocate for the elimination of FGM with local and national stakeholders because we believe that ending FGM is essential to give girls and women control over their own lives.

Last month EducAid Lumley and EducAid Maronka hosted head teachers from 65 partner schools for the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge. We facilitated training sessions that included topics relevant to the implementation of the Radical Inclusion Policy and how to engage our communities to create learning environments where no one is left behind.

On World Radio Day we recognise the role of the radio in providing information, educating people, and promoting freedom of expression across cultures. The radio can save lives during natural or human-made disasters. It is also a strategic tool for development as it can reach a wide audience that includes rural communities and people who are not literate.
Radio education was part of the Covid-19 response in many countries in the world, providing distance schooling to millions of children. In Sierra Leone, the radio had already been used for remote learning during the Ebola outbreak. Building on that experience, the Ministry of Basic & Senior Secondary Education launched a radio teaching programme with 43 radio teacher presenters and 44 hours of lessons broadcasted per week reaching more than 1.4 million children across the country. EducAid worked with the Teaching Service Commission to record 300 school lessons for primary, junior secondary and senior secondary levels.

In Sierra Leone primary school is a six-year cycle. There, children acquire fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, develop important social skills, and build abilities for critical thinking and logical judgement. At the end of the sixth year, pupils take the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) which is the entry requirement for junior secondary school (JSS).
In JSS, pupils consolidate and reinforce the abilities and skills developed through primary education while acquiring new knowledge and skills such as problem solving and reasoning. In JSS, it is critical that pupils understand their own interests and aptitudes, and reflect upon personal goals with aspirations for further studies and careers. Completion of junior secondary education is marked by the taking of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the third and final year.
Pupils who obtain their BECE are eligible for entry to senior secondary education. They can either enrol in senior secondary school (SSS) and continue with general education, or choose senior secondary technical vocational (SSTV), which offers technical and vocational education and training. Senior secondary education plays an important role in helping young people become active citizens with a sense of national and global identity, who assume the responsibility of their duties, exercise their rights with regards to others and understand the value of living in a democratic society. At the end of the senior secondary level, students sit the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to graduate from secondary education.

We believe that education cannot only aim at obtaining a degree, but it must include necessary value-based teachings to help children and young people build their character and become responsible citizens who can contribute to the sustainable development of Sierra Leone.

A team from EducAid Rolal is participating in Plan International’s Education Uninterrupted Incubator (EUI), a collaborative virtual space to develop and test youth-led ideas to ensure continuous and quality education. With support from YLabs, the EducAid team will work on video lessons to learn maths and science in a fun and easy way.
In October, our team conducted research within communities in the Port Loko district to guide their project design. They engaged out-of-school girls and boys, parents, teachers and community leaders to identify design opportunities. After that, they finalised their project design and they are now working towards building prototypes for testing.
