Happy Labour Day!

Today more than 160 countries celebrate working people and their rights. Thanks to the action taken by workers over many years, millions of people have won fundamental rights and protection. Minimum wages have been established, there are limits on working hours, and people have the right to paid holidays and sick pay.

Labour Day is an opportunity to celebrate the talents, skills and accomplishments of workers across all industries. For us, it is a moment to say thank you to all our staff, past and present, for their incredible contribution to the growth of EducAid and to the advancement of education in Sierra Leone.

Thank you!

At EducAid we believe that innovation in education is essential for Sierra Leone because it can help address some of the country’s more pressing challenges, not only those strictly related to education such as access and quality, but also economic growth and social development.

Access to education is a major challenge because of the lack of trained teachers, distance to school, and limited and often inadequate teaching and learning material. Innovative approaches can address these issues and make education more affordable and accessible to more people.

Innovation in education can also help to improve the quality of education. By using technology and other innovative approaches, educators can create more engaging, effective, and personalised learning experiences for students. This can help to improve learning outcomes and prepare students for success.

Education is a key driver of economic growth and development. Innovative education approaches can help to equip people with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in today’s rapidly changing job market. By investing in education and in innovation in education, we can create a more competitive and prosperous economy.

Education is critical for social development. By providing people with education and training, we can empower them to participate more fully in their communities. This can help to build a stronger, more democratic society.

In partnership with Fab Data, EducAid is piloting an AI chatbot for teachers. This tool can provide teachers with comprehensive answers to a wide range of education questions. Together with Imagine Worldwide, we are also introducing tablets to engage teachers and students with new learning activities.

By investing in education and embracing innovation, we can build a brighter future for Sierra Leone in line with global trends.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Today in Sierra Leone and many other countries people celebrate mothers. It is an opportunity to recognise and honour the contributions that mothers make to our lives and to society as a whole.

Our special appreciation goes to all mothers who support education and help shape young lives in our communities.

“My mother was my role model before I even knew what that word was.” Lisa Leslie

From October 2022 to May 2023 a team from the EducAid Rolal school lead by our site coordinator Kabiru participated in the Education Uninterrupted Incubator (EUI), Plans International’s innovative incubator programme which aims to advance uninterrupted access to inclusive quality education for children and young people in Sierra Leone and Ghana.

The EUI is a collaborative virtual space to develop and test youth-led ideas to ensure continuous and quality education. Our team was selected through a competitive process that awarded the most interesting project ideas. Their project was to develop video lessons for secondary school students to learn maths and science in a fun and easy way. By actively participating in the EUI and via training from the Youth Development Labs (YLabs), our team gained knowledge and practical skills in human-centred design. They learned about design research, data synthesis, ideation, and prototyping. They received mentorship from Plan International’s Inclusive and Quality Education Specialist, and gained experience in youth leadership, public speaking, and utilising professional online collaboration tools.

Working with the support of the EUI, our team was able to develop the original project concept and design STEMPower, a series of educational videos where girls and young women explain content related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). These videos have the ambition not only to support STEM teaching and learning, but also to challenge gender stereotypes, with the girls and young women presenting the topics also acting as role models for their audience and contributing to boosting the confidence of many girls and women across Sierra Leone.

As the project enters its piloting phase, we want to thank Mabinty, Augusta, Fatmata, Hawanatu and Kabiru for their dedication. What a great effort!

What if you had to walk more than 6 kilometres every day to get water?

Today at EducAid’s Book Club we talk about The Water Princess, by acclaimed author Susan Verde and award-winning illustrator Peter H. Reynolds.

With its wide sky and warm earth, Princess Gie Gie’s kingdom is a beautiful land, but clean drinking water is scarce in her small village in Burkina Faso. Every morning, she rises before the sun to make the long journey to the well. Instead of a crown, she wears a heavy pot on her head to collect the water. After the voyage home, after boiling the water to drink and clean with, Gie Gie thinks of the trip that tomorrow will bring, and she dreams of a day when her village will have cool, crystal-clear water of its own.

Inspired by the childhood of Burkinabé model Georgie Badiel, this vibrant, engaging picture book sheds light on this struggle that continues all over the world today, instilling hope for a future when all children will have access to clean drinking water.

“There is a difference between rules and agreed expectations. Rules are made by individuals and agreed expectations are prepared together with the pupils. It is not good for a teacher to impose rules on the pupils, but rather agree together with them on what is expected from all” – E. Kamara, SLEIC training participant.

The ambitious objective of the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC) is to improve learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy for children in government primary schools nationwide. EducAid is part of SLEIC, working with 65 schools and more than 500 teachers not only to support them improve their academic teaching skills, but also to train them in classroom management, inclusive practices and strategies to foster a collaborative learning environment.

Today is Africa Day, the annual commemoration of the creation of the African Union. This day serves as an important reminder of Africa’s continued collective struggle against adversity. It is a celebration of African diversity and of the cultural and economic potential that exists on the continent.

Africa Day holds significance because it is an opportunity to promote African heritage and appreciate the different cultures, traditions, languages and art forms present across the African continent. It is also a day to acknowledge the achievements of African countries and individuals and address African challenges such as poverty, inequality, conflicts, and climate change. It is an occasion to discuss issues, promote dialogue, and seek solutions to uplift the continent and improve the lives of its people.

On Africa Day, EducAid renews its commitment to increasing access to free quality education in Sierra Leone because education contributes to economic development, poverty alleviation, improved health outcomes, gender equality, social stability, democracy, and sustainable development. By prioritising education, countries can unlock the potential of their people, improve their overall well-being, and pave the way for a brighter future.

School materials play a crucial role in the education of children and young people. They are essential for the effective teaching and learning process because they enable access to knowledge, foster independent learning, and encourage students to apply what they have learned.

Our deepest gratitude goes to our partner @School in a Bag for supporting EducAid Lumley by sending 204 #SchoolBags that will make a huge difference to our students.

Each SchoolBag contains essential learning materials such as pencils, pens and exercise books, as well as a reusable water bottle, a lunchbox, and hygiene products. Everything that a child needs to go to school and learn.

Last week a delegation from Sierra Leone participated in the 30th Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) that took place for the first time in Kigali, Rwanda. PAMO is a prestigious annual event of the African Mathematics Union where the most talented secondary school students from across Africa are invited to come together to solve challenging mathematical problems in a friendly competition.

One of the six participants from Sierra Leone was EducAid Rolal student Rose Marie Sesay. Rose Marie is 16 years old and attends SS2. She loves reading, playing football and solving maths problems, of course! After representing EducAid Rolal in maths competitions at national and regional level, she made her way to PAMO 2023.

Our heartfelt congratulations go to all the students participating in PAMO. Thank you to the Sierra Leone team for representing Sierra Leone and especially to Rose Marie making EducAid and the Port Loko district proud!

On Thursdays, we hold Girl Power Group sessions with our female students. The GPG is a space to talk about gender related topics, violence prevention and empowerment. Strong female role models from local communities (and afar!) are invited as speakers to talk with students on various subjects, offering guidance and inspiration on how to achieve their dreams. This time also offers female students the opportunity to talk about the issues affecting them in their lives and work together to find solutions to their problems.

Similar sessions are held working with men and boys in our White Ribbon Campaign, where we work on violence prevention, promoting gender equality, healthy relationships and transforming social norms.

Last week, our country director Miriam joined the girls at Lumley in the Girl Power Group for an animated discussion on sex education and understanding their bodies. Knowledge is power!
